Bonnaroo will be webcasting select performances live on YouTube June 11 – 13, sponsored by Ford. Participating artists include The Dave Matthews Band, Damian Marley & Nas, The National, Regina Spektor, Julia Nunes, Spearhead, The Dead Weather, Norah Jones, The John Butler Trio, Zac Brown Band and Carolina Chocolate Drops. The live stream starts Friday June 11 on a special YouTube channel dedicated to the event .
This is just the latest live concert stream from YouTube, which previously included a concert by U2 at the Rose Bowl last November that garnered some 10 million views. YouTube also worked with Bonnaroo producers Superfly Productions to livestream the Outside Lands music festival. It’s also the latest in a string of live events streamed online from the likes of MTV, Vevo and others.
Clearly this is an area of growing interest. The advertising opportunities for live, event-based programming is high, given the exclusiveness, but streaming to many simultaneous viewers is also very expensive.
Look for Friday’s digital column in Billboard for a more in-depth examination of the trend.
