Between seven and eight million U.S. consumers have “strong interest” in a cloud-based music subscription service on the iTunes platform, according to The NPD Group .
These consumers expressed willingness at $10 and up per month for either a streaming service or access to their music collections on multiple devices.
For the last decade, analysts have described great consumer interest in subscription services. Each year, however, they have lowered their forecasts as one service after another failed to catch on with mainstream consumers. Even today, U.S. consumers have been offered many services that stream from the cloud, give unlimited tethered downloads and store music collections for listening from multiple devices.
But, NPD estimates iTunes has 50 million users in the U.S., and Apple has a track record of delivering products and services that resonate with mainstream consumers.
