Nominations for the U.K's 56th Ivor Novello Awards were announced yesterday with Manchester-based Indie band Everything Everything and London rapper/singer-songwriter Plan B leading the way with more than two nominations each, despite the former not having had a Top 40 single.
Everything Everything are up for Best Song Musically and Lyrically for "MY, KZ, UR BF" (Universal Music Publishing) and Album Award for Man Alive (Universal Music Publishing). Plan B (aka Benjamin Drew), regarded by many as a serious omission from last year's Barclays Mercury Prize list, is up for the Album Award for his soul reinvention album "The Defamation of Strickland Banks" (Universal Music Publishing) and "She Said" (Sony/ATV Music Publishing/Universal Music Publishing) for Most Performed Work. He scooped award for Best British Male at this year's Brit Awards.
The critically reviled but commercially successful band Scouting For Girls might not be up for best album but are up for Most Performed Work with their housewife and radio-friendly "This Ain't A Love Song", alongside Plan B's "She Said" (Sony/ATV Music Publishing / Universal Music Publishing) and up against Kylie Minogue's "All The Lovers" (Sony/ATV Music Publishing). The award last year was won by Lily Allen for her autobiographical track "The Fear".
Elsewhere in the Best Song Musically and Lyrically category, Irish band The Villagers are nominated for the swoony strings of "Becoming A Jackal" (Domino Publishing Company) along with "Spanish Sahara" (Universal Music Publishing) by Oxford band Foals.
Mercury Award 2010-winners and innovative London boy-girl outfit The xx might also scoop Best Contemporary Song for their understated love song "Islands", if they can pip raucous BRIT School graduate Katy B - who's up with her debut dubstep single "Katy On A Mission" (EMI Music Publishing) - to the post.
Taking place on Thursday 19th May 2011 at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London, the Ivors are voted for by musicians and composers and celebrate excellence in songwriting.
The awards are presented by BASCA (the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors) and sponsored by PRS for Music. The awards honor British composers and songwriters of works released in the UK within the previous year.
Other awards presented on the day will include those of International Achievement, Outstanding Song Collection, The Ivors Classical Music Award (won last year by Sir Peter Maxwell Davies) and the Ivors Inspiration Award.
