ShareMyPlaylists.com has announced the launch of a new music discovery iOS app based around curated Spotify playlists.
Since its launch in 2009, ShareMyPlaylists has published over 87,000 curated Spotify playlists available to its users worldwide. The site says it currently generates 10,000 playlists plays per day and has over 300 new playlists uploaded daily. As well as playlists submitted from users, ShareMyPlaylists also partners with the major and independent record companies to provide label-based playlists to users.
ShareMyPlaylists' community of music experts includes such artists and music industry personnel as Spotify's Sean Parker, whose featured playlist "Hipster International" has over 243,000 subscribers and Australian singer-songwriter and current Hot 100 chart topper, Gotye, who has contributed his own personalized mix via Universal Music operated artist playlist curator Digster.
Sean Parker's ShareMyPlaylists announced on the site's news section featured tracks by Santigold, SBTRKT, Midlake, Spankrock and many others.
But the real strength of the platform comes from its users who create and contribute their own playlists, providing the community with new verticals to discover music. For example, user Clabble has created an entire series of playlists called "Hitmakers," featuring the works of famous, yet often behind-the-scenes producers such as Ester Dean, Max Martin and Red One.
The new ShareMyPlaylists.com iOS app builds on the service that the website offers with simplified use for Spotify mobile users. Here users can filter playlists by featured, latest, most played or genre to discover new music they can then play and share the mix with a single button.
Completely rebuilt from the previous version, the main new feature is in-app playback, which they've achieved by using the LibSpotify API. Users must have a premium Spotify account and the Spotify iOS app installed for in-app playback to work.
Kieron Donoghue, CEO and founder of ShareMyPlaylists.com said in a statement: "We've now brought our entire library of over 87,000 hand curated playlists into the iOS app to offer the widest possible choice of playlists available to enable new music discovery. Our new app offers users different ways to discover new music via our community of music experts."
ShareMyPlaylists' app only has a few minor drawbacks. For one, it doesn't automatically parse out songs that aren't available to a region (ShareMyPlaylists is U.K. based), which leaves it to the user to discover which songs they can't play via an uncomfortable alert message. While sharing playlists via email, SMS, and social networks such as Facebook and Twitter has been made easy with the click of a single button, the app doesn't appear to allow users to easily subscribe to the playlists from their mobile devices making it difficult to come back and find later.
