Motion City Soundtrack teamed up with Drexel University's MAD Dragon Records to release a series of 7-inch vinyl records recorded by emerging artists. The band -- comprised of Justin Pierre, Joshua Cain, Jesse Johnson, Matt Taylor and Tony Thaxton -- is now closing out the series with their own "Making Moves," a two-track release that features "Severance," "Major Leagues," and a bonus track, a cover of Rilo Kiley's "Pictures of Success."
The alt-rock quintet is premiering one of its new tracks, "Severance," exclusively on Billboard. Listen below:
"We really wanted to write ['Severance'] for [June 2012's] 'Go' but it just didn't happen," vocalist Justin Pierre told Billboard. "I think of all the songs, 'Severance' is my favorite because it's really different, and I get to wail on the guitar -- it's my best Slash imitation."
The song is "very spacious," Pierre explained, saying that, although "Severance" isn't a complete change for the band, it's different enough that fans noticed a deviation from the typical Motion City sound when the group played the song during tour soundchecks. "It's not just a bunch of people playing over each other -- that guitar part is so beautiful on its own. It's just breathes a lot more than a lot of our songs, and when it kicks in at the end, it really takes off. It's this thing that's slowly building, then it takes a breath and builds again."
Motion City had originally planned to write a B-side for the "Making Moves" release, but when it came down to it, they didn't have enough time to write something new. So they thought to do a cover, and chose the Rilo Kiley track.
"There's one memory we have of all of us in a van touring and listening to that song, and then when the trumpets kick in in the original, everyone was just going nuts and making trumpet sounds with their mouths," Pierre laughed. "It sounds dumb and stupid -- and it really was -- but it was like three in the morning driving somewhere and it was just a fond memory."
"Making Moves" will be released jointly on MAD Dragon Records and Motion City Soundtrack's own Boombox Generation label on Nov. 6. The physical vinyl will contain two tracks, and the "Pictures of Success" cover will drop with the digital package.
The band kicked off a U.S. tour earlier this month, and they wrap with a Nov. 18 show in Minneapolis.
