New York promoter Bowery Presents is making its first foray into running a New Jersey venue with the re-opening of the Wellmont Theatre in Montclair this fall. The maiden show at the 2,500-capacity building will be Hanson on Nov. 1.
Also scheduled for the fall are shows by Tony Bennett, the Decemberists, Steely Dan, Wolf Parade and Al Green, among others. The Wellmont Theatre opened in 1922 as a movie palace and has undergone extensive renovations in the last year to convert it to a concert venue.
For Bowery Presents, the move follows an aggressive expansion in the tri-state area in the past year that has also included the opening of the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn and the 3,000-capacity Terminal 5 in midtown Manhattan.
The company has also taken on some promotion duties for shows at other area venues, including the Apollo Theatre, Radio City Music Hall and Madison Square Garden, and is now expanding to the northeast, including the Schubert Theatre in New Haven, Conn., and the Orpheum Theatre in Boston.
