Simon Cowell started a quick conversation by soliciting an opinion from this reporter about the premiere episode of The "X Factor" that will tonight (Sept. 21) on Fox. After noting that it is indeed as he has said it would be -- over the top, full-bore production values and loaded with emotional back-stories -- he seemed pleased with the assessment.
The Parents Television Council has filed an indecency complaint after contestant Geo Godley dropped his pants while performing on Wednesday night's premiere of The X Factor. A giant "X" logo covered his crotch, while judge Paula Abdul stormed off the set.

"X Factor" auditions wrapped last night after two weeks, eight hours of footage, six cities and thousands of contestants.
162 contestants made it through the "X Factor" auditions, but only 32 will continue on to the final competition. In the first 15 minutes of the "X Factor" bootcamp round, that number was slashed down to 100.
The second and final "X Factor" boot camp episode continued last night, with the last X groups performing and the next round of cuts. There were still 100 contestants remaining when the two-hour episode began; by the end there were only 32.

The episode kicked off with the three performances remaining from Wednesday's episode.
Group 1 of Episode 2: Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On"
Brennin Hunt, Equality, Marcus Canty, Matthew Johnson, Ma'at Bingham Shango, Chris Rene and Gina Rene
Brother and sister rappers Chris and Gina Rene were both in the first group -- although they auditioned in separate cities, both as solo artists. Marcus Canty did especially well, but the entire group rocked it.
Group 2 of Episode 2: Rascal Flatts' "I Won't Let Go"
Mathew Slovacek, Tim Cifers, Hannah Bethel, Thomas Wells, Jeremy Easley and Kingston
Country connoisseur Tim Cifers began the performance alone onstage, and the rest of the performers took the stage one-by-one. Simon called Tim a star, saying that he just didn't get him before. He was the only star in the group and the rest of the performance was average.
Group 3 of Episode 2: Snow Patrol's "Chasing Cars"
The Brewer Brothers, Henri Bredouw, James Douglas, Emma Henry, Hannah Jackson, Ryan Sims, Kyle Corr and Christa Collins
Overall the last group performance was pretty unremarkable. The Brewer Brothers did pretty well, while Ryan Sims and Christa Collins really stood out, drastically overshadowing the rest of the performers as they belted the final two verses.
After the last of the ensembles performed, the contestants were separated into three large groups. Everyone in the first group was sent home, and while the other two groups went on to the final day of bootcamp. The 64 remaining contestants were asked to perform a song that showed they were talented enough for a $5 million recording contract. After these songs, only 32 would make it to the next round of "X Factor."
The contestants performed in front of a live audience of 3,000 people, but the solo performance flew by for the TV viewers at home -- clips were shown from only 20 of the 64. Bubbly 13-year-old Rachel Crow kicked off the show, performing sensationally as always, with Beyonce's "If I Were A Boy."

Teen couple Makenna and Brock and Prince-inspired Siameze Floyd struggled more than usual, and Simon began to get irritated. As Brennin Hunt sang an upbeat rock version of Alicia Keys' "If I Ain't Got You," Simon cut him off mid-song and put the show on hold. "Why are they making these weirdo versions?" Simon frustratedly asked the producers during the break. "It's just not working."

Once the temperamental judge cooled down, the show was back on, with impressive performances by Stereo Hogzz, Chris Rene and Nick Dean. Up next was stay-at-home mom Stacy Francis, who wowed the judges at auditions but struggled during the first days of boot camp. She started crying as she told the judges that her father had passed away just as she arrived for boot camp.

Tiah Tolliver, Cari Fletcher, Caitlin Koch and Leroy Bell also performed and received good reactions from the judges -- who weren't supposed to make comments but often couldn't resist.
