Wyclef Jean has been receiving death threats over his proposed candidacy for the Haitian presidential election, according to a report by The Associated Press. The hip-hop star said Tuesday (Aug. 17) that he has gone into hiding in an undisclosed location in the Caribbean after revealing the threats in a series of e-mails to the AP.
Jean is also facing the possibility of not being allowed to run in the November presidential race due to the election's residency requirements. Although Haiti's Constitution requires candidates to have lived in the country for five consecutive years, Jean believes his 2007 appointment as a roving ambassador exempts him from the rule.

Haiti's electoral commission postponed a ruling on who will be allowed to run in the election on Tuesday night, leaving the status of Jean's candidacy unknown.
The former Fugees member registered as a Haitian presidential candidate earlier this month. In a video filmed for CNN last week, Jean explained the goals of his candidacy and what he sees for the future of Haiti.
