Acclaimed singer/songwriter David Wilcox plans to hit the road next month in support of his forthcoming concert album "Live Songs and Stories." The tour will put him on the road beginning April 13 in Philadelphia, and on the road he'll stay through at least the month of July.
Due April 9 from Colorado-based What Are Records? (W.A.R.), the 21-track "Live Songs" collection spotlights Wilcox in his most natural setting: on stage. Along with fan favorite songs such as "Waffle House," "Show the Way," and "That's What the Lonely Is For," Wilcox' wit and storytelling style is on full display in these recordings, captured over the course of five years.
"[When I'm on stage,] I realize that the real instrument I'm playing is not the strings and the words and what the songs are," Wilcox says of the album. "It's more just orchestrating the emotion of the room and finding ways to draw people in and getting them together -- moving from one emotion to another. That's the real instrument."
"Live Songs and Stories" follows last October's "The Very Best of David Wilcox," released by A&M, through which he released three of his seven studio albums. Wilcox has also recorded for the Koch and Vanguard Records labels, and released one previous live set, 1995's "East Asheville Hardware," which was primarily made up of previously unreleased material.
Confirmed dates for Wilcox' U.S. tour in support of "Live Songs" currently stretch into early June, with a full slate of June and July gigs expected. Along with clubs and theaters, the trek will find Wilcox performing May 31 and June 1 at the annual Kerrville (Texas) Folk Festival.
