Wilco has fulfilled its contract with Nonesuch Records and appears to be launching its own label, according to an interview with Washington, D.C-based newspaper Express.

Guitarist Nels Cline told the paper that he didn't know the name of the imprint but that frontman Jeff Tweedy "was basically not wanting to be on a record label for a while" and that Wilco will be "striking out on our own, our own label."

A band spokesperson confirms to Billboard that "Wilco's deal is indeed up with Nonesuch Records. It has not yet been determined who will release the next Wilco record, but forming their own label and releasing future albums through it is definitely a potential scenario."

There's no timetable for Wilco's next album, the follow-up to 2009's "Wilco (The Album)." The band released four studio albums and a live collection on Nonesuch, beginning with 2002's "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot." That collection was infamously rejected by Wilco's former label, Warner Bros., leading Wilco to part ways with the company and sign with Nonesuch, where upon its release it became the band's best-selling album to date. According to Nielsen SoundScan, "Foxtrot" has sold 674,000 copies, and "Wilco (The Album)" has sold 271,000.

Cline told Express that Wilco may release a 7-inch single in conjunction with its Solid Sound Festival, which the band is curating in North Adams, Mass., from Aug. 13-15.

Describing the direction the new Wilco album may take, he added, "I think we'd love to make a really up-tempo alienating record -- I think everyone agrees that would be enjoyable -- but the natural course of music-making kind of precludes that. When things start to take form naturally, you kind of have to honor that. Who knows? There may be ballads. I don't really know, but I do think there is going to be some rocking. You can guarantee a fair quotient at least of some form of rock."

Prior to the Solid Sound Festival, Tweedy will has a handful of solo shows in Spain on tap this week. Wilco will then tour Europe in September.
