White Stripes, Room 5 Lead U.K. Charts Again

The White Stripes' "Elephant" (XL Recordings) still wears the No. 1 crown on the new U.K. album chart yesterday (April 13). It was a quiet week that saw only one top-10 entry, "The Very Best of the Lighthouse Family" (UMTV), which contains the many hits the British-based duo has released since 1995. On the singles survey, "Make Luv" by Room 5 featuring Oliver Cheatham (Positiva) leads for a third week.

New at No. 2 was "Cry" (Universal Island), the debut solo single by Kym Marsh, once of erstwhile "Popstars" favorites Hear'Say. Daniel Bedingfield scored his latest top-10 single with "I Can't Read You" (Polydor) at No. 6, while Erasure's remake of Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel's 1975 U.K. No. 1 "Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me)" (Mute) debuted at No. 14. A remix of "It's Tricky" by Run-D.M.C. featuring Jacknife Lee (Arista) opened at No. 20.

Elsewhere on the album chart, Coldplay's "A Rush of Blood to the Head" (Parlophone) moved up 5-2 in the wake of the band's London shows at Earls Court during the week, while Avril Lavigne's "Let Go" (Arista) rebounded 8-4. Coldplay's Parlophone labelmate Athlete scored a No. 19 debut with its debut album "Vehicles & Animals," while Good Charlotte's "The Young and the Hopeless" (Epic) enjoyed a 64-33 surge.

Despite falling from No. 1 in its second chart week in some markets, Linkin Park's "Meteora" (Warner Bros.) consolidates its lead on Music & Media's European Top 100 Albums chart. It's still a bestseller in such markets as Germany, Italy, and Norway. 50 Cent's "In Da Club" (Interscope) takes over on the Eurochart Hot 100 Singles tally, up 4-1 in its fourth chart week.
