White Stripes Make Plans For New Year

The White Stripes have confirmed a New Year's Eve concert in Chicago and will kick off 2004 with a handful of European/U.K. dates, taking up the latter half of January and stretching into February. The Dec. 31 show at Chicago's Aragon Ballroom will see the Detroit blues duo share a bill with the Flaming Lips and Blanche.

In mid-January, the Stripes will commence their tour with a Jan. 19 show in Liverpool, England. The band is scheduled for eight more U.K. dates in January, including two-night stands at London's Alexandra Palace; Glasgow, Scotland's SECC and Blackpool, England's Empress Ballroom. A Feb. 1 date in Paris is also on the itinerary.

As previously reported, the White Stripes scored four Grammy nominations -- three as a band and one for frontman Jack White. One of those is an album of the year nod for "Elephant" (V2/Third Man Records), which debuted in April at No. 6 on The Billboard 200 and has sold 1.2 million copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Singer/guitarist White also contributes five tracks to the "Cold Mountain" soundtrack, due Dec. 16 from DMZ/Columbia. Among them are the traditional "Wayfaring Stranger," Howlin' Wolf's "Sittin' on Top of the World," the Ralph Stanley-popularized "Great High Mountain" and the originals "Never Far Away" and "Christmas Time Will Soon Be Over."

In related news, White may face assault charges relating to an incident Saturday night (Dec. 13) at Detroit's Magic Stick nightclub. At the record-release party for Blanche's "If We Can't Trust the Doctors" (Cass), White allegedly got into a fight with Von Bondies singer/guitarist Jason Stollsteimer.

Both White (real name: John Anthony Gillis) and Stollsteimer filed complaints with Detroit police; Stollsteimer's alleges that White pulled him to the ground and repeatedly punched his right eye, while White's claims he was defending himself after being throttled by Stollsteimer. At deadline, no charges had been filed in the case.

Here are the White Stripes' tour dates:

Dec. 31: Chicago (Aragon Ballroom)
Jan. 19: Liverpool, England (Royal Court)
Jan. 20-21: London (Alexandra Palace)
Jan. 23: Nottingham, England (Ice Arena)
Jan. 24-25: Glasgow, Scotland (SECC)
Jan. 27-28: Blackpool, England (Empress Ballroom)
Jan. 29: Brindlington, England (SPA)
