Westlife, Steps Top U.K. Charts

Comments

Irish pop pin-up act Westlife achieved its ninth U.K. No. 1 yesterday (Nov. 11) as "Queen Of My Heart" (RCA) replaced Afroman's "Because I Got High" (Universal Island) at the top of the region's singles chart. It's the lead song from the quintet's third album "World Of Our Own," which is released today. Those nine chart-toppers have been achieved in just two-and-a-half years, since "Swear It Again" opened the group's account in May 1999.

Meanwhile another pop five-piece, Steps, returned to No. 1 on the U.K. album chart with the Ebul/Jive set "Gold - The Greatest Hits," despite powerful competition from no fewer than four new entries. Pink Floyd's EMI/Chrysalis compilation "Echoes" was the highest of those at No. 2, followed by Sting's live A&M set "All This Time" at No. 3, Britney Spears' "Britney" (Jive) at No. 4 and the Corrs' "The Best Of" (Atlantic) at No. 6. Last week's No. 1, Michael Jackson's "Invincible" (Epic), fell to No. 5.

Back on the singles survey, controversial U.K. garage collective So Solid Crew followed the chart-topping "21 Seconds" with a second top-3 hit, as the Relentless follow-up "They Don't Know" came in at No. 3. The group recently attracted front-page headlines in the U.K. following a shooting incident at a 21st birthday party in London for member Romeo.

Columbia's All-Star Tribute version of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On," which raises funds for AIDS research and victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the U.S., entered the singles chart at No. 6. Cher, meanwhile, placed "The Music's No Good Without You" at No. 8. The single is the lead track from her new WEA album "Living Proof," which is also out today.

Meanwhile across Europe, no one can topple Kylie Minogue from No. 1, as her "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" (Parlophone) spends a seventh straight week at the top of Eurochart Hot 100 Singles chart in Music & Media. Michael Jackson's "Invincible (Epic) powered straight to the top of European Top 100 Albums chart.
