Watson Twins Catch A 'Fire' On Vanguard Debut

Comments

In 2006, the Watson Twins gained notoriety after appearing on Rilo Kiley frontwoman Jenny Lewis's "Rabbit Fur Coat." Now they're ready to branch out on their own with their debut album, "Fire Songs," due June 24 via Vanguard.

The 11-song set was paired down from 30 contenders, a process that Chandra Watson describes as a "real personal experience."

"My sister and I, we have an open relationship," she says of their songwriting habits. The two write separately, then bring their work to each other. "We can say, 'That needs to go to back to the drawing board.' Then we'll flesh [the songs] out vocally together."

Although the title is a lyrical reference from the song "Old Ways," listeners will notice that "Fire Songs" has a warm production quality that Chandra says was achieved by recording to analog tape. "The records I enjoy are the ones where I feel like I'm in that room with the person," Chandra explains. "We definitely wanted that analog tape sound."

"Fire Songs" has been finished since December, and the Twins are beyond anxious for it to get out into the world. "When people have kids, and they worry about going into the big bad world, it's like that," she says. "It feels like this real intimate and personal thing that you about to show to the world."

The Watson Twins are plotting tour dates for summer and fall.

Here is the track list for "Fire Songs":

"How Am I To Be"
"Lady Love Me"
"Fall"
"Just Like Heaven"
"Map to Where You Are"
"Dig A Little Deeper"
"Sky Open Up"
"Bar Woman Blues"
"Only You"
"Old Ways"
"Waves"
