Warped Tour Bands Team For Film

Rancid, Simple Plan, the Used, Less Than Jake, the Ataris and other acts on the 2003 Warped Tour will appear in "Punk Rock Holocaust," a feature-length slasher flick being filmed on this summer's tour. The movie went into production June 19 at the opening date of the Warped Tour in Nampa, Idaho. "Punk Rock Holocaust" is being directed by 23 year-old Doug Sakmann.

The film will be shot at each venue along the 44-date tour. The plot centers around a number of mysterious deaths happening during the festival. In the film, many believe a fictional band is seeking revenge from beyond the grave for being kicked off the tour six years ago. Nearly every band on this year's outing is slated to appear in the film to try to solve the mystery.

"Punk Rock Holocaust" is being produced by Backseat Conceptions, a B-movie company that has also funded "4 Days in Panties" and "Bikini Bandits." The latter features Tool's Maynard James Keenan, Dee Dee Ramone, the Dead Kennedys' Jello Biafra and Corey Feldman. Skamann has worked for Troma films and previously wrote and directed the company's "Tales From the Crapper."

It is unknown if "Punk Rock Holocaust" will be released to theaters or go straight-to-video. Sakmann is encouraging Warped Tour goers to email him at doug@backseatconceptions.com if they have any ideas they think they can bring to the production.

The Warped Tour isn't the first major summer festival intended for the setting of a fictional film. In 2001, Ozzy Osbourne's wife Sharon enlisted director Penelope Spheeris ("Wayne's World," "The Decline of Western Civilization") to direct a feature-length film on that year's Ozzfest. The idea was eventually abandoned in favor of the Ozzfest documentary "We Sold Our Souls for Rock 'n' Roll." Sharon Osbourne has since prevented Spheeris from giving her film a wide release.
