Back to SXSW coverage

Billboard.com's SXSW 2010 coverage is delivered via Sprint 4G.

The infectious, authentic funk and soul of Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings always inspired crowds to party like it's 1969. And it's no surprise that each of the bands SXSW gigs stood out as one of the day's not-to-miss shows. Fresh off three showcases in two days, Jones and all nine Kings brought down the house one last time at the Austin Music Hall (March 19), and our cameras were there to soak up the band's retro vibes.

Billboard caught up with Sharon Friday afternoon in bustling downtown Austin where she talked about the SXSW vibe, the game of love and her God-given musical gift. Jones, 54, explains she and the band had to start their own label, the independent Daptone Records in order to, "keep our funk and soul, our idea of what we wanted to do alive."

"I Learned the Hard Way" is the fourth LP from the band and due out April 6. Stay tuned to Billboard.com all weekend for more excluvie SXSW performances, interviews, news and more.
