"Very organic" is how Kid Rock described his upcoming album, "Born Free," when he sat down for a video chat last week at Billboard's Music and Advertising conference in New York.

Tentatively due out Sept. 7, and produced by the always iconoclastic Rick Rubin, "Born Free" may be a rock and roll record, but it's also a showcase for Kid Rock's many many music-making friends. The album's 14 prospective songs, Rock explains, feature everything from a collaboration with Zac Brown to a track featuring Bob Seger playing piano with Sheryl Crow singing to a "rocky blues shuffle" called "Sounds Good To Me" featuring vocals from Trace Adkins. Elsewhere, Rock enlists both rapper T.I. and Martina McBride on the same song. "It just made sense," he says, a sentiment that McBride echoed on camera a couple weeks ago when we caught up with her in Nashville.

Kid Rock will hit a few stages this summer, but he's holding the real tour for sometime after the album's release this fall.
