Usher, Avril, Green Day Rank As Kids' Choice

With the votes in and the slime poured, Usher, Avril Lavigne and Green Day were selected as the top music winners at the 18th annual Kids Choice Awards, held Saturday in Los Angeles and broadcast live on Nickelodeon.

Hosted by actor/comedian Ben Stiller, the show at UCLA's Pauley Pavilion featured performances by Will Smith and Simple Plan and appearances by celebrities such as Johnny Depp, Will Ferrell and Mia Hamm, as well as plenty of silliness involving gooey green slime.

Lavigne was named favorite female singer, while Usher took the corresponding male honor and the favorite song award for his single "Burn." "Make sure you brush your teeth, say your prayers, eat your vitamins," Usher said. "You can be anything you want to be in life. All you have to do is believe in yourself."

Even though Green Day's latest album, "American Idiot" (Reprise), is the most adult-themed of its career, the band earned the favorite music group mantle.

Smith, who performed the single "Switch" from his new Interscope album, "Lost and Found," picked up the award for favorite voice from an animated movie for his work in "Shark Tale." Accepting the award from his wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith, and comedian Chris Rock, Smith encouraged the audience to read. "There is no problem you can have that some person hasn't had before and solved," he said.

Several artists who are also actors were awarded for their work in the latter field, including Hilary Duff, who took the favorite movie actress trophy for "A Cinderella Story," and Queen Latifah, who was honored with the Wannabe Award as the celebrity kids most want to be like. "I thank all of you so much for letting me do what I do for a living," Latifah said. "I so love what I do."

In the television categories, Romeo ("Romeo!") was named favorite actor and Raven Symone ("That's So Raven") favorite actress. The Fox singing competition "American Idol" was dubbed the favorite television show and "Ray" star Jamie Foxx netted the celebrity hidden talent award.

Winners are chosen by kids via online, phone and mail-in voting through the Nickelodeon magazine. The telecast will receive encore airings tomorrow (April 5, 5 p.m. ET/PT) and Saturday (6 p.m. ET/PT).
