Update: Pearl Jam Heads Back To 'Mine'

Pearl Jam has selected "I Am Mine" as the first single from its upcoming seventh Epic studio album, due Nov. 12, a week earlier than its original date. The waltz-tempoed track, penned by frontman Eddie Vedder, is set to hit U.S. radio outlets Sept. 17 for airplay consideration. A commercial single, backed with the B-side "Down," is due Oct. 8.

"I Am Mine" was debuted by the full band last October at Neil Young's Bridge School Benefit outside San Francisco and later performed by Vedder in a handful of solo performances this spring. A videoclip of the Bridge School rendition can be streamed from Pearl Jam's official Web site.

Vedder hinted in the latest Pearl Jam fan newsletter that at least some of the new songs have been influenced by the events of Sept. 11. And while the words for "I Am Mine" do not reveal specific references to the terrorist attacks, they reflect the shrinking personal freedoms of a nation on perpetual alert. "Me, I figure as each breath goes by / I only own my mind," Vedder sings in the track, which features the repeated chorus lyric, "And the feeling it gets left behind / Oh, the innocence broken with time."

Other confirmed tracks include the mid-tempo numbers "Love Boat Captain" and "Bushleaguer," the latter of which "features some recitation," according to the band's official Web site. The new set was produced by the band with Adam Kasper and mixed by frequent collaborator Brendan O'Brien. Pearl Jam is expected to return to the live stage with a few shows later this year, before launching a world tour in early 2003.

In other Pearl Jam news, guitarist Stone Gossard recently released a third album with his Brad project. At his Seattle-based Studio Litho, he also executive produced and played bass on Mudhoney guitarist Steve Turner's solo debut. Mike McCready plays guitar on the Wallflowers' upcoming Interscope set "Red Letter Days," due Sept. 24. Vedder contributed two cuts to the Columbia/DV8 Ramones tribute "We're a Happy Family," due Nov. 5.
