Lou Bega's international hit "Mambo No. 5" has been picked up for the U.S. by RCA and rush-released to radio. The vocal reworking of Perez Prado's swing-era instrumental has been No. 1 in Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands, and Spain. According to Billboard Bulletin, the song is already receiving airplay at top-40 powerhouses WKTU New York and KIIS Los Angeles. Bega's album is due for U.S. release in early September.
Subtitled "A Little Bit Of...," the song features rhyming lyrics that name women who brighten up the singer's life. After the 23-year-old Bega made a mid-April appearance on a German TV game show, the song became a major airplay hit. Bega, who's of Sicilian/Ugandan descent, told Billboard: "I grew up with this music, and I always thought it was a shame there were no lyrics to sing along to this particular song.
