U.S. Acts Storm U.K. Singles Chart

By a slim margin, Atomic Kitten's "Whole Again" (Innocent/Virgin) stayed at the top of the U.K. singles chart, preventing American rock act Wheatus from enjoying a spectacular start to their British career. The group's Columbia single "Teenage Dirtbag," which was ahead in midweek rankings, just missed out on the top honors, entering at No. 2, right next to another impressive debut chart placing for a U.S. rock act, as Papa Roach's "Last Resort" (DreamWorks/Polydor) arrived at No. 3.

As U.S. acts all but took over the top-5, Fun Lovin' Criminals achieved the highest ranking of their five-year U.K. chart lives with "Loco" (Chrysalis) at No. 5. Joe's "Stutter" featuring Mystikal (Jive), currently No. 2 on The Billboard Hot 100, opened at No. 7.

Toploader's Sony S2 single "Dancing In The Moonlight" continued its unlikely recovery of recent weeks. The band, nominated for four titles at the 2001 Brit Awards, reached No. 19 in the U.K. last March with their cover of King Harvest's late 1972/early 1973 U.S. hit, before a remixed version was reissued in November, charting at No. 11.

That version has shown remarkable staying power of late, holding at No. 21 for three weeks before climbing 17-13 and this week jumping to No. 8. The group's new single "Only For A While," re-recorded from their double platinum-selling "Onka's Big Moka" album, is due for U.K. release March 19, with a U.K. tour starting two days later.

Dido's "No Angel" (Arista) spent a second week at the top of the album chart, pursued by Anastacia's "Not That Kind" (Epic), which edged up 3-2. Roy Orbison's "Love Songs" (Virgin) made a strong 19-11 climb, while "Songbird," by the late U.S. vocalist Eva Cassidy, shot 33-19. The Blix Street album, released in the U.K. in August 1998, has been buoyed by recent promotion on BBC2's "TOTP2" show.

As Eminem ended his short, predictably controversial European tour on Saturday at London's Docklands Arena, his single "Stan" (Interscope) began a 10th straight week at the top of the Music & Media's Eurochart Hot 100 Singles survey. Jennifer Lopez's "J. Lo" (Epic) held down the No. 1 spot on the European Top 100 Albums chart for a second week.
