Top Stars Line Up For Japanese Festivals

Radiohead, the Strokes, Travis, Puddle Of Mudd, Blur, Blink 182, and New Found Glory are scheduled to play Japan's Summer Sonic Festival, to be held Aug. 2-3 in Tokyo and Osaka. Other bands on the bill include Cheap Trick, Blondie, the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, the Doors, Placebo, the Datsuns, and Starsailor.

For the Strokes, Summer Sonic will be the group's first scheduled show of 2003 (manager Ryan Gentiles tells Billboard.com, "when we're ready to go public with other dates, we'll do so"). The Strokes are still in the midst of a two-song "trial" recording session with acclaimed producer Nigel Godrich and had pledged not to play live until work on their next RCA studio album was completed. Gentiles expects the group to spend about two more weeks recording with Godrich.

In other Japanese festival news, Bjork, Elvis Costello, Primal Scream, Iggy Pop, Zwan, and Steve Winwood are some of the artists confirmed to play the country's Fuji Rock Festival, set for July 25-27 in Nigata. According to the festival's official Web site, Underworld, John Squire, Prefuse 73, and Mogwai will also perform at the Naeba Ski Resort. More acts will be announced in the coming weeks.

One of the biggest rock events in Japan, Fuji Rock has previously featured Joe Strummer, White Stripes, Oasis, and the Prodigy.
