Metallica, the first act to offer the service, already has more than 200,000 users registered for @metallica.com E-mail addresses, XingMail reports. CEO Andy Hong says the branded E-mail service gives artists the ability to direct-market to fans.
Some acts, including Outkast, will offer E-mail as a premium service on their sites, charging $19.95 per month. In exchange, subscribers receive exclusive information, preview tracks, and offers on merchandise and concert tickets. "It's a fan-club type of concept but a new way of generating revenue," says Hong.
