TMBG Plan 'Holidayland' EP

On the heels of the group's recently released Restless debut, "Mink Car," They Might Be Giants now have a holiday EP coming down the pike. The group will release the five-track "Holidayland" disc Nov. 6, led by a version of the track "Santa Claus" by 1960s Northwest garage rock act the Sonics.

Not to be confused with the Sonny Boy Williamson blues classic, with lyrics like "a cute little honey, drugs and money," and the refrain "Hey Santa Claus, is there something for me inside that sack, and he just said 'Nothin'! Nothin'! Nothin'!,'" the notorious song has spawned covers by the likes of Thee Headcoatees, Sonic, and the Woggles over the years. The original "Santa Claus" appeared on a holiday compilation on the Etiquette label, and is available as a bonus track on the Norton Records reissue of the band's debut, "Here Are the Sonics!"

Also featured on the TMBG EP are four other holiday-themed tracks the group has released over the years, including "Santa's Beard" (from the group's 1989 Elektra album "Lincoln"), "Careless Santa" (from 1996's "Unsupervised," the first album from John Flansburgh's TMBG side project Mono Puff), and the Hanukkah-related song "Feast of Lights." The set closes with a traditional German rendition of "O Tannenbaum," previously available only on a limited edition, green vinyl seven-inch single.

Currently on the road in support of "Mink Car," TMBG pulls into Lincoln, Neb., tonight (Oct. 9). The group has U.S. dates scheduled through Nov. 3 in New York, with a short U.K. tour kicking off Nov. 22 in London, and lasting through a Nov. 29 performance in Norwich, England. Late last month, "Mink Car" debuted at No. 134 on The Billboard 200.
