A sophomore No. 1 album for the Killers and a first chart-topping single by Razorlight were the highlights of the new U.K. sales charts unveiled yesterday (Oct. 8), a remarkable double victory for Universal's Vertigo label.
The Killers' second album, "Sam's Town," entered at the top with sales of 268,000 copies, outdoing the Las Vegas band's 2004 debut, "Hot Fuss," which opened at No. 6 in June 2004 and reached No. 1 in its 32nd chart week in January last year. "Hot Fuss" was certified quadruple platinum in the U.K. for shipments of 1.2 million units.
Razorlight's "America," the current single from its self-titled second album, raced 15-1, outdoing last year's No. 2 hit "Somewhere Else" and the No. 3 peak achieved in July by the album's opening single" "In the Morning." Meanwhile, "Razorlight" dips 3-4 this week.
The top new entry on the singles chart was actor David Hasselhoff's "Jump in My Car" (Skintight) at No. 3. Hasselhoff previously had a No. 35 hit on the British charts with "If I Could Only Say Goodbye" in 1993. "Come to Me" (Bad Boy) by P. Diddy featuring Nicole Scherzinger climbed 30-4 and "Rock This Party (Everybody Dance Now" (Defected) by Bob Sinclar & Cutee B jumped 21-5, both following physical release.
The album chart also had a newcomer in the runner-up spot, as Evanescence arrived at No. 2 with "The Open Door" (Wind Up). The band topped the U.K. charts with its 2003 predecessor, "Fallen."
Irish easy listening singer and chart regular Daniel O'Donnell entered at No. 10 on the new chart with "Until the Next Time" (Rosetta), his eighth U.K. top 10 album in the last eight years. Australian rockers Jet came in at No. 13 with "Shine On" (Atlantic) and Lionel Richie leapt 59-15 with "Coming Home" (Def Jam).
Across Europe, Polydor's Scissor Sisters rule the composite sales charts, moving 2-1 with "Ta-Dah" on the European Top 100 Albums chart and "I Dont' Feel Like Dancin'" on Eurochart Hot 100 Singles.
