Sweet Relief Celebrates 10 Years

Comments

A Nashville concert series featuring Victoria Williams, Josh Rouse, Carolyn Dawn Johnson and others will serve as the 10th anniversary celebration for the Sweet Relief Musicians Fund. Events will take place across four days later this month in Music City to raise awareness of and funds for the charity.

Jamie O'Neal and Johnson will kick off the series with an Aug. 25 show at the Trap. Hosted by Billy Block, the concert will also feature Jeffrey Steele, David Ball, Joy Lynn White, James Otto and Christy Sutherland.

The next night will see Williams and her husband, Mark Olsen (Jayhawks, Harmony Creekdippers), joined by Rouse, Julie Miller, Jason White, Will Kimbrough, Tommy Womack, Last Train Home and Jeff Black at 12th and Porter, where the show will be hosted by Kim Webber.

John Mayer will donate 50 cents from each ticket to his Aug. 27 show at Nashville's Starwood Amphitheatre to Sweet Relief. And on Aug. 28, music journalist Dave Marsh will host an event at the Country Music Hall of Fame to discuss healthcare reform ideas as they relate to musicians.

Founded in by Williams in 1994, Sweet Relief is a non-profit organization that provides financial assistance to musicians for medical expenses and basic needs. Along with concert events and donations, two compilation CDs have raised funds for the effort. The first in 1994 featured Pearl Jam, Lou Reed and the Jayhawks covering Williams' songs. In 1996, "Sweet Relief II: The Songs of Vic Chesnutt," boasted contributions from R.E.M., Soul Asylum, the Indigo Girls and Garbage.
