Boyle thus makes it three out of three album victories, but with sales suffering the law of diminishing returns. Her 2009 debut "I Dreamed A Dream," which spent its first four weeks at No. 1, opened with 411,000 units sold. Last year's follow-up, "The Gift," had one week at the top, selling an initial 102,000. "Someone" opens with 72,000.
Michael Bublé's "Christmas," which started at No. 3 two weeks ago, rebounded 5-2 on sales of 61,000, while last week's bestseller, Florence + the Machine's "Ceremonials" (Universal Island), dipped to No. 3 with 58,000, following 94,000 the week before. Pop hitmaker Cher Lloyd's first album "Sticks & Stones" debuted at No. 4, while its latest single "With Ur Love," featuring Mike Posner, dipped 4-6.
Another hot singles act, The Wanted, posted a No. 5 start for their sophomore album "Battleground," as Coldplay's "Mylo Xyloto" fell 2-6. "And The Waltz Goes On" by Andre Rieu and the Johann Strauss Orchestra opened at No. 7. Up-and-coming 15-year-old female singer-songwriter Birdy's self-titled debut for 14th Floor/Atlantic/Warner Music arrived at No. 13 and "A Foot in the Door: The Best of Pink Floyd" at No. 14. Columbia/Sony Music Entertainment's "Greatest Hits" set by Simon & Garfunkel came in at No. 16, with their repackaged "Bridge Over Troubled Water" at No. 47. On the compilation chart, "Clubland 20" debuted at No. 1.
The Rihanna single sold a further 79,000 units last week to finish comfortably ahead of pop band JLS' "Take A Chance On Me." A new song, not an Abba cover, its No. 2 debut was fuelled by 67,000 sales. "Earthquake," by Labrinth featuring Tinie Tempah, held at No. 3 as Professor Green's "Read All About It," featuring Emeli Sandé, fell to No. 4 after two weeks at the peak.
There were also top ten climbs again for Ed Sheeran's "Lego House," 6-5, and "Without You," by David Guetta featuring Usher, 10-7. British pop favorite Pixie Lott arrived at No. 10 with "What Do You Take Me For," fearuring Pusha T.
