Summer Olympics Soundtrack Due Sept. 18

"The Official Soundtrack: The Games of the XXVII Olympiad - Music From The Opening Ceremony," currently being recorded in Melbourne, will include music by indigenous artists such as Tina Arena and John Farnham & Olivia Newton-John. To be released Sept. 18 jointly by Sony Music Australia and BMG Australia, the set features songs written specifically for the Games by artists chosen to "reflect the enormous diversity and talent of Australian music."

The album will be available throughout the country, as well as via the international sporting competition's official Web site.

Featured tracks on the disc will include Arena's "The Flame," Newton-John & Farnham's duet "Dare To Dream," Vanessa Amorosi's "Heroes Live Forever," and Nikki Webster's "Under Southern Skies."

Other artists taking part in the opening ceremonies and appearing on the disc are Julie Anthony, Human Nature, Bruce Rowland, Elena Kats-Chernin, David Page, Michael Askill, Chong Lim, Paul Grabowsky/Ian Cooper/John Frolich, Pee Wee Ferris, David Hirschfelder, David Stanhope, Richard Mills, and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

The Sept. 15 ceremony at Olympic Stadium at Homebush in west Sydney, to be seen in the U.S. on NBC television, is being assembled by director of ceremonies Ric Birch, who worked in executive capacities on both the 1984 Los Angeles and the 1992 Barcelona Olympic ceremonies.

The actual ceremony will also include the participation of more than 3,500 choir members from the Sing 2001 Choir, Sydney Philharmonia Choirs, Sydney University Musical Society, the Millennium Choir of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia, and the Sydney Children's Choir.

The Oct. 1 closing ceremony will feature Aussie pop duo Savage Garden, who will perform the title track of its sophomore album, "Affirmation." Other participants rumored to be taking part are hard rockers AC/DC, INXS, and Aboriginal band Yothu Yindi.

Meanwhile, the Sydney Morning Herald reports that organizers of the Paralympic Opening Ceremony are angered over rumors that Summer Olympics officials are attempting to sign Australian pop star Kylie Minogue to participate in their closing ceremonies, because she is contracted to headline the Oct. 18 opening ceremony of the Paralympics.

Officials reportedly fear that if Minogue -- who will star in a rock opera for the Paralympics that will also feature Yothu Yindi, Amorosi, and Christine Anu -- plays the Olympic closing ceremony, it will diminish public interest in her performance and hurt ticket sales.
