Stones Get 'Licks' In Early In Toronto

The Rolling Stones performed a surprise club show Friday night in Toronto in preparation for their upcoming Licks world tour, which kicks off Sept. 3 in Boston. Approximately 700 invited guests, including actresses Liv Tyler and Sharon Stone, and 300 paying fans witnessed the legendary rock band perform a 15 song, 80-minute set at the Palais Royale, a historic lakeshore dancehall where Frank Sinatra and Duke Ellington once played.

Songs included the opener "It's Only Rock'N'Roll" and an Otis Redding cover, "Can't Turn You Loose." The group, which has been rehearsing in Toronto since mid-July, also delivered such obscurities as "Hot Stuff" from "Black and Blue" and "Sad Sad Sad" from "Steel Wheels." Also debuted was "Don't Stop", one of the four new songs set for inclusion on the "40 Licks" compilation, due Oct. 1 via Virgin.

Videoclips from the show are available for streaming on the Stones' official Web site. It was the third consecutive club appearance for the Stones in Toronto prior to commencing a tour. In 1994, the group performed at the RPM Club before its Voodoo Lounge tour and in 1998 at the Horseshoe Tavern before the Bridges To Babylon/No Security jaunt.

The full setlist for the show was:

"It's Only Rock'N'Roll"
"Sad Sad Sad"
"If You Can't Rock Me"
"Stray Cat Blues"
"Hot Stuff"
"Don't Stop"
"Honky Tonk Women"
"Torn and Frayed"
"Wild Horses"
"Happy"
"Can't Turn You Loose"
"Heart of Stone"
"Can't You Hear Me Knocking"
"Jumpin' Jack Flash"
"Brown Sugar"
