Sting, Colvin Bolster Botti's 'Night Sessions'

Comments

Columbia has set an Aug. 6 DVD release for trumpeter Chris Botti's "Night Sessions: Live in Concert." The DVD is drawn from a November 2001 concert at Los Angeles' El Rey Theatre and features guest appearances by Shawn Colvin and Sting, in whose band Botti previously played. The live band also features bassists Jimmy Johnson and Christian McBride, drummers Vinnie Colaiuta and Abe Laboriel, Jr., and pianist Billy Childs.

Colvin sings on "All Would Envy" (written by Sting but making its recorded debut here) and also performs her own "The Facts About Jimmy." Stings lends his vocals to "In the Wee Small Hours" and his familiar "Moon Over Bourbon Street." The tracklist is rounded out by such Botti compositions as "Alone in the City," "Easter Parade," and "Miami Overnight." Interviews with Botti, Colvin, and Sting are also included, as is a photo gallery.

"Sting's performance was spectacular and Shawn's contribution was sensational creating a night of musical magic," Botti said in a statement. "I've been fortunate to have played with some fantastic performers in recent years -- both on stage and on my albums, but this night stands among the most memorable."

The DVD will serve as an accompaniment to Botti's "Night Sessions" album, which hit No. 2 on Billboard's Top Contemporary Jazz Albums chart and No. 18 on Billboard's Heatseekers tally earlier this year.
