kWelsh rock trio Stereophonics achieved its fifth consecutive U.K. No. 1 album yesterday (Oct. 21) with "Pull the Pin" (V2), while Sugababes' "About You Now" (Universal Island) started a fourth week atop the singles chart.
"Pull the Pin" extends Stereophonics' run of No. 1 albums to eight years, since their second set, "Performance and Cocktails," hit the top in 1999. The first single from the new album, "It Means Nothing," reached No. 12 in the U.K. earlier this month; the second, "My Friends," is released Dec. 3.
Stereophonics pushed Sugababes' "Change" down to No. 2, while Eric Clapton's "Complete Clapton" (Polydor) fell 2-3. Phil Collins' "Hits" (Virgin) climbed 10-7 as his 1981 hit "In the Air Tonight" continued its current top 20 re-run, and Mark Ronson's "Version" (Columbia) rebounded 13-8 as "Valerie," its current single featuring Amy Winehouse, moved up 3-2 behind Sugababes' "About You Now."
There was a No. 9 album chart entry for popular English pianist, bandleader and T.V. presenter Jools Holland's "Best of Friends" (Rhino), while "R.E.M. Live" (Warner Bros.) started at No. 12. Paul Anka's "Classic Songs -- My Way" (UMTV) opened at No. 13, following his No. 9 success two years ago with "Rock Swings."
Former Moloko frontwoman Roisin Murphy came in at No. 20 with "Overpowered" (EMI) and longtime British vocalist Alison Moyet landed at No. 21 with "The Turn" (W14 Music). Jennifer Lopez managed just a No. 24 debut with "Brave" (Epic).
Elsewhere on the singles chart, Britney Spears starts at No. 3 with "Gimme More" (Jive), her first appearance on that survey since "Do Somethin'" reached No. 6 in March 2005 and her 17th U.K. top 10 hit. "Apologize" (Interscope) by Timbaland featuring OneRepublic raced 32-6.
