Stars To Celebrate Steinway Anniversary

New York's Carnegie Hall will host a three-day concert series celebrating the 150th anniversary of legendary piano maker Steinway & Sons. Under the title "A Celebration of Music," the June 5-7 event will feature performances by Herbie Hancock, Randy Newman, Nancy Wilson, Art Garfunkel, Ramsey Lewis, and others.

"It gives me great pleasure to commemorate the significant milestone of my great grandfather's company," 87 year-old Henry Z. Steinway said in a statement. "And to know that his vision continues to live on through the unique sounds of a Steinway piano played by hundreds of thousands of musicians, young and old, throughout the world."

Other artists who will perform during the concert series are Peter Cincotti, Ben Heppner, Ahmad Jamal, Eroica Trio, and Roger Williams. The first night will celebrate classical music, the second jazz, and third pop. The concerts will be filmed for a television special that is tentatively scheduled for a fall broadcast.

Tickets will range from $50 to $150 and will go on sale March 31 through the Carnegie Hall (212.247.7800 or carnegiehall.org).

In addition to the concerts, Steinway has produced two pianos to commemorate the 150th anniversary. One was created by fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld, while the other is a recreation of one of the company's historic pianos, which was played by Ignace Jan Paderwski in 1891.

The company has also launched a search for the oldest Steinway in America, and will reissue Ronald Ratcliffe's book "Steinway," which traces the company's history, as well as that of the family. Throughout the year, the public is also invited to tour the Steinway factory in Astoria, Queens.

A number of anniversary keepsakes have also been created through partnerships with chocolate maker Godiva, high-end plush manufacturer Steiff, and crystal/glassmaker Steuben. For more information on all of the activity, visit Steinway & Sons' official Web site.
