Wind-Up rock act Stars Of Track And Field is demoing material for its next studio album, which is due in late spring or early summer 2008.
Guitarist/vocalist Jason Bell and bandmates Kevin Calaba (vocals, guitar, keyboards) and Daniel Orvik (drums, samples, programming) have been holed up in their Portland, Ore., practice space, but don't plan on recording the actual album at home.
"I think we might get the hell out of the rain," says Bell. "I think that had a lot to do with our last record. It's so f*ckin' rainy and dark and grey, you can't help but sit down and start turning knobs. So, we're thinking of recording it in Tucson, in the desert."
The bass-less trio, which blends ambient digital sounds with live instruments, is going for a "more organic" approach this time around. "The sampling is more live sampling and I don't think we're going to remain a three-piece. I think we're going to be a five or six piece -- probably a bass player, and then a string instrument, a viola/violin person who can sample and loop, and then another guitar/keyboard player."
Songs that Bell feels will "for sure" be on the still-untitled album include "In Bright Fire," which the band has been playing live; "Safety in Numbers," which is just acoustic guitar, piano and three-part harmonies; the acoustic-based "Dying of Life;" and "On a Cloud."
The new set will be the band's first to be A&R-ed by Wind-Up; 2005's "Centuries Before Love and War" was initially released on the Sideshow label before being reissued by Wind-Up.
"Obviously, we don't fit the normal Wind-Up band at all, so it was an interesting decision on our part," Bell says. "But at the same time they have a lot of success and the whole point was to play in front of as many people as you can and get your art across to as many people as you can and they seem really able to do that."
