Stagehand Death Halts Miami Bowie Show

David Bowie canceled last night's (May 6) scheduled concert in Miami after a local stagehand fell to his death at the James L. Knight Center prior to the performance. Details of the accident and the stagehand's identity have not been disclosed. A statement from promoter Clear Channel Entertainment says police are investigating the incident.

"A statement was read to the audience after the accident, informing them that refund or postponement information would be available shortly," the Clear Channel statement says. "David Bowie and his touring company are deeply saddened by the news of this tragic accident and send their sincerest condolences and thoughts to the stagehand's family and friends."

According to sources, the stagehand was a spotlight operator who fell to the stage while setting up for Bowie after opening act Stereophonics had completed its set.

Although attempts were made to resuscitate the man at the scene, he was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Sources say the man was not wearing a safety harness.

The second leg of Bowie's North American leg A Reality tour is scheduled to continue tomorrow in Atlanta at the Chastain Park Amphitheatre. Dates are on tap through June 5 in Holmdel, N.J., after which the tour will head to Europe for shows into mid-July.
