Bruce Springsteen surprised music fans over the holiday weekend when he dropped into the Stone Pony in Asbury Park, N.J., and turned in an hour-long set with Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes and Graham Parker. About 2,500 people were on hand for the Sunday night show, which marked the one-year anniversary of the legendary club's reopening.
With Southside and the Jukes, Springsteen contributed guitar and vocals on "The Fever," "I Don't Wanna Go Home," a medley of "New York Shuffle" and "I've Been Working Too Hard," and "Trapped Again," with Parker joining in. Then came covers of Aretha Franklin's "Chain of Fools," Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Born on the Bayou," and Southside's staple closer, a raucous version of Sam Cooke's "Havin' a Party."
Club owner Dominic Santana, who was monitoring reports of a tornado in the area, said he was thrilled with Springsteen's impromptu performance. "Every time he hits the stage, there's a storm," Santana said. "Basically, he chased the tornado and sent it another way."
Other artists who participated in the Jersey Shore club's weekend-long birthday celebration included Patti Smith, Bobby Bandiera, and Gary U.S. Bonds.
