Songwriters Sue Over TLC's 'Unpretty'

Comments

Former Living Colour lead singer Corey Glover and his songwriting partner Michael Cirincione have filed a copyright-infringement suit against R&B trio TLC, alleging that portions of the group's 1999 LaFace/Arista hit "Unpretty" were lifted from a song they had written for the group the previous year. The suit -- filed Feb. 1 in U.S. District Court in the Southern District of New York -- also names as defendants producer Dallas Austin, LaFace, Arista, BMG Music, and EMI Music Publishing.

Glover and Cirincione's lawyers contend that the pair offered TLC a song they wrote called "Make Up Your Mind" for the 1999 album "Fanmail," but were told by LaFace that it would not be used. They say the No. 1 hit "Unpretty," which appeared on the album credited to Austin and the group's Tionne Watkins, uses significant, uncredited portions of "Make Up Your Mind."

Glover and Cirincione are seeking compensation of all profits derived from the sale of "Unpretty," statutory damages, and legal costs. Lawyers for TLC could not be reached.
