The breadth of Latin music is evident in the list of finalists for the 2005 Billboard Latin Music Awards, which will air live April 28 on Telemundo. The awards will bring to a close the 16th annual Billboard Latin Music Conference, to be held April 25-28 at the Hotel Intercontinental in Miami.
Topping the finalists list is Mexican grupero star Marco Antonio Solis, who garnered eight nods in the major categories. Fonovisa artist Solis is a finalist both for his pop albums and for compilations from his grupero days with Los Bukis.
Overall, Solis is a finalist in categories that include Hot Latin Tracks artist, Top Latin Albums artist and songwriter of the year. His prevalence on the charts was propelled by his hit "Mas Que Tu Amigo" and sales of the album "Razon de Sobra." "Razon" is a contender for Latin pop album of the year, male.
Pop acts Juanes and Paulina Rubio are each finalists in five categories. They will vie against Solis for Hot Latin track of the year and Hot Latin Tracks artist of the year. Juanes is also up for Top Latin Albums artist of the year for "Mi Sangre" (Surco/Universal); a track from that set, "Volverte a Ver," is No. 1 this week on the Billboard Hot Latin Tracks chart.
Rubio, who has seen a steady string of hits from "Pau-Latina" (Universal), is up for Latin pop album of the year, female. Another major star, Sony Discos artist Marc Anthony, is a finalist in four categories.
A new award this year recognizes the growing popularity of reggaeton. Finalists for reggaeton album of the year are Daddy Yankee, Don Omar, Ivy Queen and Lunnytunes.
