The fourth installment in a continuing series of compilations based around Fox Television's "Ally McBeal" will be released next Tuesday (April 24) on Sony's 550 Music label. Like past sets, the bulk of the material on "Ally McBeal for Once in My Life" is by singer/songwriter Vonda Shepard, whose performances as a cast member anchor the themes of the David E. Kelley-produced show.
This latest set is described as "a musical expression of the emotional peaks and valleys" experienced by the show's title character as the result of her relationship with fellow attorney Larry Paul, played by troubled actor Robert Downey Jr.
Shepard turns in the show's title track, the original "You and Me," and a cover of Bob Dylan's "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright." She is also joined by Daylight/Epic recording artist Anastacia on a cover of Gary Wright's "Love is Alive," which the pair will perform on the show's May 7 episode; and teams up with cast member Downey to cover Bob Seger's "Chances Are."
Downey also turns in an original song of his own, the piano ballad "Snakes," and collaborates with Sting on a rendition of the Police's "Every Breath You Take." The idea to record the track came after Sting called upon longtime friend Downey to join him in performing it during an August 2000 concert at Los Angeles' Greek Theatre. The duo will perform the track on the April 30 episode of "Ally McBeal."
Rounding out "Ally McBeal for Once in My Life" are a trio of classic R&B numbers: "You're the First, the Last, My Everything" by sometimes series guest Barry White, Al Green's "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart," and Tina Turner's "When the Heartache Is Over."
To celebrate the release, Shepard and Downey will on Tuesday sign copies of the album at the Virgin Mega Store in Hollywood, Calif., beginning at 7:30 p.m.
"Ally McBeal For Once in My Life" follows the November 2000 release of "A Very Ally Christmas," which peaked at No. 9 on Billboard's Top Holiday Albums chart, No. 11 on the Top Internet Album Sales tally, and at No. 59 on The Billboard 200. The inaugural disc of the series, "Songs From Ally McBeal" (Epic), was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America for U.S. shipments of 1 million copies. The second disc, "Heart and Soul -- New Songs From Ally McBeal" has moved 453,000 copies in the U.S., according to SoundScan.
