The Hamburg edition of the Live Earth climate change concerts featured a lineup of international stars, including Shakira, Snoop Dogg and Enrique Iglesias, and major domestic acts, ending nine hours later with a performance by surprise guest Yusuf Islam, formerly Cat Stevens.
Shakira kicked off the extravaganza at HSH Nordbank Arena and was greeted with a standing ovation in the pouring rain from the estimated crowd of 30,000. The Colombian superstar performed a four-song set that included "Hips Don?t Lie" before jetting off to Vienna for a concert of her own later tonight.
The event was presented by former ice skating world champion Katarina Witt and featured 21 artists, including Katie Melua, Reamonn, Chris Cornell, German swing singer Roger Cicero, German language bands Silbermond and Juli from Berlin, hip-hopper Sammy Deluxe, pop-singer Sasha and the Hamburg local hero Lotto King Karl. Yusuf, who was also greeted with a standing ovation in pouring rain, closed the event with "Wild World."
Between sets, international organizations championed their messages. World Future Council, with Bianca Jagger, received great applause when it sent 130 children to the stage to present its project to champion the rights of future generations. In addition, the World Wide Fund For Nature unveiled its climate witness program to the audience.
The perimeter of the Hamburg arena was lined with stands offering information on climate protection. The proceeds from the concerts are to be donated to Live Earth climate protection projects; artists performed free of charge.
