Secret Machines Leave Reprise For World's Fair

Secret Machines are switching from Reprise Records to the World's Fair Label Group for their third album, a self-titled effort likely due in October.

Frontman Brandon Curtis told Billboard.com that Reprise essentially leased the album back to the trio, which in turn signed the deal with World's Fair. The set is the follow-up to 2006's "Ten Silver Drops" and the first to feature new guitarist Phil Karnats in place of Curtis' older brother Benjamin.

Brandon Curtis said the nine tracks on "Secret Machines" are "hard to describe. We wanted to capture what the feeling was at the moment. We were worried about continuing the band (after Benjamin's departure), so you have that kind of darkness and stress."

Secret Machines have been previewing some of the new material during recent live dates, including "Atomic Hell," "Dreaming of Dreaming" and a droning epic called "The Fire is Waiting." The album was recorded at the Magic Shop in New York City and mixed at Electric Lady Studios and produced by Brandon Mason, who engineered "Ten Silver Drops."

"We've never had one person be with us the whole time -- through pre-production, recording and mixing," Brandon Curtis notes. "I think it really helped us this time, especially since (Mason) had worked with us before.

"I put so much pressure on myself normally, and this time there was even more," he continues. "I just had to remember I was happy to have a chance to still do (music) and fortunate that this is something I can do for a living, you know?"

Secret Machines are currently on the road, opening some shows for Stone Temple Pilots and Coheed & Cambria. The tour ends Aug. 10 at the All Points West Festival in Jersey City, N.J.
