Barely a month after it released its latest Thrill Jockey album, "One Bedroom," Chicago-based rock quartet the Sea & Cake has another mini-album ready to go. Due May 8 from Thrill Jockey, the seven-track "Glass" features four new songs plus three remixes of "One Bedroom" cuts provided by Stereolab, Broadcast, and Carl Craig. Former Liquid Liquid principal Richard McGuire has also created a video based on the Sea & Cake's cover of David Bowie's "Sound and Vision," originally issued on "One Bedroom."
As a whole, the new material is a bit more experimental than usual, with "Traditional Wax Coin" featuring guitarist Archer Prewitt on piano and a mix of live and effect-altered drumming from John McEntire. "An Echo In" is another new twist for the band, a seemingly straightforward, upbeat rock number smudged up with processed vocals, hand claps, and vintage keyboard tones.
Until its commercial release, "Glass" will be sold exclusively on the Sea & Cake's current North America tour with labelmate Califone, which touches down tomorrow (March 19) in Austin, Texas. The group will team with labelmate the Lonesome Organist for a March 28 show in Chicago, while labelmate Brokeback will be on the bill for the April 25 tour finale in Washington, D.C.
In related news, the next album from Tortoise (which features McEntire) has been pushed back to an early 2004 release date via Thrill Jockey. Tortoise drummer John Herndon will release the "Missing Dragons" EP under the moniker A Grape Dope this spring via Galaxia.
