Joe Nicolo, former president/co-owner of Ruffhouse Records, has formed a hip-hop label to be distributed and marketed by RCA. The label, Judgment Records, has signed former Ruffhouse act Kris Kross, which has an album tentatively due in March.
Nicolo and former partner Chris Schwartz shuttered the Columbia-affiliated Ruffhouse -- which launched the careers of the Fugees, Lauryn Hill, Cypress Hill, and others -- earlier this spring. Nicolo's new label is a division of his Philadelphia-based Judgment Entertainment, of which he serves as president/CEO.
The company is also launching a music-publishing arm; a motion-picture production division is up and running, according to Nicolo. Schwartz has formed his own Philadelphia-based music and film company, Chris Schwartz Entertainment Group.
In addition to Kris Kross, Judgment has signed Philadelphia hip-hop acts Co-Defendants, Ced Sinatra, and Roc Monee.
