Roy Hargrove Busts Out The 'Groove'

Trumpeter Roy Hargrove and his well-known friends are in a funky mood on his new disc "Roy Hargrove Presents the RH Factor: Hard Groove," due May 20 from Verve Records. The jazz star has enlisted such guests as D'Angelo, Erykah Badu, and Common for the album, which dabbles in funk, R&B, and hip-hop.

"It was a whirlwind of creativity," Hargrove said in a statement about the album. "We had a great time, and I think that good energy comes through on the record. In the end, the album came out exactly the way I hoped it would be and then some."

Hargrove, who has played on albums by some of his guests - notably D'Angelo's "Voodoo" (Virgin), Badu's "Mama's Gun" (Universal/Motown), and Common's "Like Water for Chocolate" (MCA) -- asked each of those musicians to join his band, the RH Factor. D'Angelo contributes his roots-funk sensibilities to the Funkadelic cover "I'll Stay," while Badu -- a high-school classmate of Hargrove's -- wrote the lyrics to "Poetry," which also features vocals by rapper Q-Tip and bassist Me'shell Ndegeocello.

Hargrove's last album to grace the Billboard charts was his collaboration with Herbie Hancock and Michael Brecker, "Directions in Music (Celebrating Miles Davis & John Coltrane)" which hit No. 2 on Billboard's Top Jazz Albums tally last year. The set won best jazz instrumental album, individual or group at last month's 45th annual Grammy Awards.
