Rough Trade Celebrates 25 Years of Independence

Veteran U.K. independent record label Rough Trade will celebrated its 25th anniversary in style next month. Commencing Feb. 23 at the V&A Museum, Rough Trade record shops will present 10 days of live music across London, comprising 20 shows from acts including Beth Orton, Tindersticks, Mark Mulcahy, Vic Goddard and Nectarine No. 9, Bis, Mark Eitzel, Tiger Lillies, and Barry Adamson.

Mute Records will join the festivities by releasing a special 50-track compilation album entitled "Rough Trade - 25 Years," due for a March 3 release. The three-CD package will consist of a variety of previously unreleased and rare tracks from an eclectic group of artists, including the Chemical Brothers, Lee "Scratch" Perry, Stereolab, Cornershop, Lambchop, and the Fall.

Both the album and the shows are intended to showcase the diversity of indie talent across all genres past and present. Proceeds from the live events will go to a variety of U.K. charities, including the Sickle Cell Society and Breast Cancer Campaign.

A quarter of a century ago, Geoff Travis opened the first Rough Trade shop in Kensington, West London. What followed was an expansion into a record label that soon became the last word in the indie scene, thanks to the success of bands such as the Smiths and Stiff Little Fingers.
