Rock Reigns At KC's Spirit Fest

Better Than Ezra, Robert Bradley's Blackwater Surprise, and .38 Special are among the acts appearing during the 19th annual Kansas City (Mo.) Spirit Festival. The May 31-June 2 event will present national, regional, and local acts across six stages in the city's Penn Valley Park.

The mainstage will offer modern-leaning acts on the festival's opening night, with Sister Hazel and Shawn Mullins among the artists joining Better Than Ezra on the bill. After an opening set by modern act Sense Field, day two will welcome a blues slant with Bradley's Blackwater Surprise joined by Double Trouble and Jonny Lang, among others.

The Spirit Festival's closing night will focus solely on classic rock, with Eddie Money, Elvin Bishop, Leon Russell, the BK Rock and Roll All-Stars (featuring Foreigner's Lou Gramm, Grand Funk Railroad's Mark Farner, and the Blues Brothers' Steve Cropper), and .38 Special all set to perform on the Ford Expedition-sponsored mainstage.

Additional stages will present blues, jazz, reggae, electronic music, and "retro rock" acts, while a children's pavilion will showcase family-oriented music and activities. The Spirit Festival will also feature food and merchandise vendors and a carnival midway with games and rides.

Daily tickets for the event are available through local Texaco StarMart locations for $9, or $10 at the festival gate. A $40 three-day "gold circle" pass that includes up front seating and parking is available online via Tickets.com. Adults 65 and over and children 12 and under can enjoy the Spirit Festival for free.

The volunteer-run festival has raised more than $1 million for local charities over the last 18 years. For more information, visit the Spirit Festival Web site.
