Last night, the MTV O Music Awards 2 took over The Roxy in West Hollywood to celebrate "the best in digital music"--for the second time this year.
The O Music Awards had their inaugural ceremony this past April in Las Vegas, where fans got to cast their votes to decide who would take home the awards for everything from "Most Innovative Artist" to "Favorite Animated GIF" to "Best Tweet." This go around a few categories may have changed, but winners included Bjork (Digital Genius Award), Tokio Hotel (Fan Army FTW; they won the same award back in April), Nirvana (Best Vintage Viral Video), and Adam Lambert (Must Follow Artist on Twitter). Fans cast more than 20 million votes.
Awards aside, the show kicked off with an unsurprisingly fantastic performance from Swedish pop goddess Robyn, who tore through her dance hit, "Call Your Girlfriend." Robyn's performance was broadcast on MTV, but the rest of the event was streamed on various Viacom Music Group websites like MTV.com, VH1.com, CMT.com, and more.
Keeping with the whole Internet theme, awards presenters like Kelly Clarkson, Demi Lovato, and Odd Future's Tyler, The Creator, all sent in pre-recorded web cam videos announcing the nominees.
Other show highlights included a tribute to Steve Jobs, which started with a short video narrated by Yoko Ono followed by a characteristically wackadoo performance from The Flaming Lips, who covered The Beatles' classic "Revolution," with frontman Wayne Coyne clad in tin foil and various band members playing with iPads.
Up-and-coming rapper Mac Miller also stopped by for two songs, "Party on 5th Avenue" and "Frick Park Market," while The Band Perry and Alabama Shakes also performed.
The biggest award of the night went to the O Music Awards themselves, who recruited a bunch of willing--and perhaps slightly nutty--participants to dance for twenty-four hours to the music of DJ Diamond Kuts and successfully break the Guinness World Record for Longest Dance Party. The dance-a-thon also helped raise money for the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network, The It Gets Better Project, The Gay Straight Alliance Network, Human Rights Campaign, Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, and the Trevor Project.
