Rare Croce Cuts Collected On CD, DVD

Shout! Factory Records has set an Oct. 14 release for two new releases honoring the life and work of late singer/songwriter Jim Croce. A CD, "Jim Croce Home Recordings: Americana," featuring previously unreleased material recorded in 1967, and a DVD, "Have You Heard: Jim Croce Live," will arrive a month after the 30th anniversary of Croce's death in a plane crash.

The tracks on "Home Recordings" were recorded by Croce in his kitchen on a reel-to-reel tape recorder in 1967. The songs mostly comprise American folk/roots classics such as Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee's "Living With the Blues," Merle Haggard's "Mama Tried" and Lefty Frizzell's "Mom & Dad's Waltz." The recordings were compiled by Croce's widow Ingrid and his son A.J.

The DVD will collect Croce's early 1970s performances on television, bolstered with home movies, family photos and commentary by the likes of Randy Newman, Kenny Loggins and Jim Messina. The DVD is narrated by Ingrid and A.J. Croce, lending anecdotes and stories. The disc also includes an animated version of Croce's hit "Bad Bad Leroy Brown" sung by Cher and Sonny Bono.

Shout! Factory is also working on other archival Croce releases, including "Facets," an early album Croce made in 1966 that was limited to a 500-copy pressing. The label is shooting for an early 2004 release date for that disc.
