R. Kelly nabs his fifth No. 1 this week on The Billboard 200 with "TP.3 Reloaded" (Jive). The controversial artist's latest release starts well above the competition with 491,000 U.S. copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan, trumping fellow top 10 entries by Missy Elliott and Webbie by more than 300,000 units.
The set hooked fans with the much talked about "Trapped in the Closet," a five-part urban soap opera that has been released sequentially to radio since April. Kelly also co-directed and stars in a 16-minute film for "Trapped," which can be found on a limited edition CD/DVD combo of "TP.3 Reloaded."
Featuring cameos by Snoop Dogg, the Game, Nivea and Twista, among others, "Reloaded" is also Kelly's ninth No. 1 on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums list. His previous effort, 2004's "Happy People/U Saved Me," started at No. 2 with 403,000 copies and has sold 1 million to date.
Rap veteran Missy Elliott debuts at No. 2 with "The Cookbook." The Goldmine/Atlantic effort, which boasts current top 10 Billboard Hot 100 hit "Lose Control" featuring Ciara & Fat Man Scoop, starts with 176,000 units. Elliott's last album, "This Is Not a Test!" opened at No. 13 with 144,000 in 2003 and has sold 690,000 so far; her best-selling set to date remains 2002's "Under Construction" at 2.1 million copies.
At No. 8, Webbie completes the new entries in the top 50 of The Billboard 200 this week with his Trill/Asylum solo bow, "Savage Life," which moved 68,000 copies. Current single "Give Me That" featuring Bun B climbed to the top 10 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs list last week and is the seventh most-played clip at MTV2.
Despite a 10% dip to 127,000, Coldplay's "X&Y" (Capitol) hangs on at No. 3 for a second week, while Mariah Carey's "The Emancipation of Mimi" (Island/Def Jam) remains at No. 4 with 116,000, a 12% fall.
Sales of the Ying Yang Twins' "U.S.A.: United States of Atlanta" (TVT) plummeted 50% to 101,000 units, precipitating a 2-5 drop on the chart. Last week's No. 1 debut, George Strait's "Somewhere Down in Texas" (MCA Nashville), sees a similar fate, falling to No. 6 on a 63% slide to 91,000 copies.
The Black Eyed Peas' "Monkey Business" (A&M/Interscope) saw a 16% sales tumble to 75,000 and falls one position to No. 7, while the Foo Fighters' "In Your Honor" (RCA/Roswell) dips 7-9 on a 25% slip to 66,000. Rounding out the top tier is Gwen Stefani's "Love, Angel, Music, Baby" (Interscope), which falls 9-10 despite a 2% sales gain to 62,000.
Overall U.S. album sales were down 3% from the previous week at 10.5 million units and 12% below the same week last year. At 293 million units, sales for the year trail 2004 by 7.7%.
