Q-Tip Gets 'Abstract' As Kamaal

Comments

Kamaal, who as Q-Tip was the former leader of rap act A Tribe Called Quest, will release his second solo album, "Kamaal the Abstract," Oct. 23 via Arista. The artist self-produced the nine-track set, which is a melange of hip-hop, jazz, rock, and funk featuring guest appearances by jazz artists Kenny Garrett (saxophone), Gary Thomas (sax, flute), and Kirk Rosenwinkle (guitar).

"This is music I always wanted to create, something that allows me to explore all sides of myself," Kamaal said in a statement. "This music is fearless, this band is incredible. You can't name something after yourself unless it represents a part of you. This is ultimately about new beginnings and taking back real music."

"Kamaal the Abstract" is the follow-up to 1999's "Amplified," which debuted at No. 4 on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and No. 28 on The Billboard 200, and was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America for U.S. shipments of 500,000 copies. The set spawned the single "Vivrant Thing," which peaked at No. 7 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart, No. 10 on the Hot Rap Singles tally, and No. 26 on The Billboard Hot 100.
