Avril Lavigne's "Girlfriend" (Arista) was the highest new entry on the singles chart at No. 3, matching her previous highest-ranked single in the market with "Complicated" in 2002. "Destination Calabria" (Data) by Italian DJ Alex Calabria featuring Crystal Waters climbed 18-5.
It was a good chart for two north of England rock bands. Newcastle's Maximo Park raced 30-9 with "Our Velocity" (Warp), the first single from the new album "Our Earthly Pleasures," out April 2. Birmingham's the Twang scored a debut top 20 hit as "Wide Awake" (B Unique/Polydor) climbed 32-15. Striking one for the capital, London-based quartet Ghosts' "Stay the Night" (Atlantic) jumped 59-25. The Proclaimers' original recording of "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)," on Chrysalis, responding to the publicity surrounding the new version, climbed 37-26 and Hilary Duff's "With Love" (Angel) rose 60-29.
On the album chart, Take That's "Beautiful World" (Polydor) returned to the top in its 17th week, up 2-1 as its total U.K. sales moved past 1.5 million units. Ray Quinn's "Doing It My Way" (Syco Music/Sony BMG), which debuted at No. 1 last week, fell to No. 2, as much-discussed rock newcomers Enter Shikari entered at No. 4 with "Take to the Skies" (Ambush Reality). Nelly Furtado's "Loose" (Mosley/Geffen) took an 11-6 climb and there was a No. 13 debut for Good Charlotte's "Good Morning Revival" (Epic).
"Loose" (Mosley/Geffen) leads European Top 100 Albums for a fourth non-consecutive week, while "The Sweet Escape" (Interscope) by Gwen Stefani featuring Akon tops Eurochart Hot 100 Singles for a third week.
